Learning About Pumpkins

Here is our bulletin board display showing activities that we have done on the topic of pumpkins. The children have learned to identify the inside and outside parts of a pumpkin. They have used their eyes, hands and nose to make observations about a pumpkin. They estimated seeds and measured the circumference, width and height of pumpkins.  We will continue to learn about pumpkins by observing our seeds growing in our `pumpkin patch and by watching ``Rachel the Pumpkin`` turning into compost. To see those activities closer, and other activities go under Our Classroom Activities tab.

Spaceship and Space

A few weeks ago, Adam showed an interest in building a spaceship. We did an inquiry to find out what the children knew and what they wanted to know about spaceship and space. We had lots of fun building a rocket, a spaceship and a moon. The children learned why astronauts wear a helmet, a backpack, a space suit and boots when they go into space. They also learned what they eat, how they sleep and even how to use the washroom in their spaceship. You can go under the tab Inquiry to listen to children answer the questions.

Procedural text: How to make a rocket.

The children also listened to songs about the sun, moon and planets of our universe. Here is what they have learned:

There are 8 planets (Ben).
We turn around the sun (Giluliana G.). The sun is super hot (Adam).
Mercury: It is as small as the moon (Giuliana G.)
Venus: It is the same size as Earth (Ben). There are volcanos and mountains (Sean)
Earth: It is where we live (Anthony). There is gravity (Sean). There is oxygen (Devin).
Mars: The planet is red (Sean). It has 2 moons (Davan).
Jupiter: It is the biggest planet (Ben).
Saturn: It has a ring (Ben) made of lots of rocks (Colin).
Uranus: It is laying on its side (Adam).
Neptune: It is the coldest planet (Ben) and it rains a lot (Sean).

Pizza

Today, Tianna, Kaitlyn, Alessa and Colin got to serve pizza and birthday cake in their Pizza Restaurant. It all started when they were making pizza and birthday cake with playdough and then wrote a menu for a pretend pizza restaurant. Mrs. Cole and I thought it would be a good learning experience for them if they got to sell pizza and birthday cakes in a real life situation. We decided to get all the children involved by having them create their own pizza recipe, as we were already talking about procedural text in our Inquiry of Space and with our apple crisp. We chose to have Colin serve apple crisp as his birthday cake for a healthier choice.

This morning the children used their recipe to make their own pizza. We then set up four tables where Tianna, Kaitlyn and Alessa got to sell the pizza made by their classmates. Colin sold apple crisp on which he added a candle to make birthday cakes. Nahisha, Giuliana M., Ben and Ava got the be cashiers and Giuliana G. did an amazing job as our hostess. Here are a few pictures. Do not forget to view your child`s ePorfolio to see your child in action.

Apples

 Apple Crisp

On Tuesday, the class made apple crisp. First, we started by reading the book "How do Apples Grow." Then, we made some observations on apples. The children looked at two apples and observed that apples can be red, yellow or green and that some apples are big and others are small.

Then, the children started to share with the class how apples were part of their Thanksgiving. Adam mentioned that he had apple pie with ice cream. Kaitlyn ate apple cake. Colin also ate apple pie and apple donuts. Tammy ate a whole apple. Christina enjoyed eating apple crisp. Tianna, Ava, Giuliana G.  and Giuliana ate apple pie for dessert. Finally, Mahmoud drank apple juice. Before cutting their apples, the children touched them and told us how it felt in their hands. Here were their observations:

Ben - soft
Sean - hard and round
Adam - soft and round, tastes like peaches dried up
Christina- strong
Aiden - like apple
Preston - hard
Anthony - hard
Mahmoud - hard
Brandon - rough
Recette de la croustade aux pommes
Jackson - hard
Antonio - feels cold
Alessa - soft
Tammy - rough
Giluliana G. - rough
Alessio - hard

Nahisha - hard
Hannah - smooth
Colin - cold
Arman - soft

At story time, we read the book ''Max and Mo Let`s Go Apple Picking!'' We decided to make ''apple prints'' following the instruction in the book.

Retelling the Story Mouse Count

After reading the story Mouse Count, the children were encouraged to practise retelling the story using the Light Table. Here are three retells of the story by Adam, Antonio and Kaitlyn.

Making Predictions

By looking at the cover page of the book "La pomme rouge", Aiden was able to predict that the story was going to be about an apple. Colin answered the "when"and "where" by saying that the story was happening outside during the day because it was light. Kaitlyn added that there was grass. The children identified the characters as a girl, rabbit, squirrel and bear. The story started with the girl going up the hill and dropping her apple, which started to roll down the hill. She asked the rabbit to stop the apple and then the squirrel but they all started rolling down the hill themselves. We took a pause to predict what was going to happen after and how the story was going to end. Here are some answers given by the children.

Giuliana M. - "The bear is going to take the apple to a far away place."
Sean - "The bear is going to eat the apple."
Aiden - "Their friends are going to put down the apple."
Brandon - "The apple is going to hit the bear."
Tammy - "The apple is going to go down."
Devin - "All of them are going to share the apple."
Colin - "The apple will roll and turn into ice cream cone and they cut it in half and share the ice cream cone."

The story ended with Brandon and Devin's being correct about their predictions.
