Bird Feeders

During our Angry Birds inquiry, we talked about foods that are healthy for birds. We chose to make the bird feeders using oranges as they are biodegradable, consequently good for the environment. We had the children mix the ingredients that they brought in with shortening. The shortening (fat), is an important part of birds` diet, especially after a long winter.
We put the bird food in the oranges and hung our bird feeders on trees.

Today, we looked at our bird feeders to see if the birds had eaten the food.  We observed that the food in most of the bird feeders did not seem to have been touched.  We asked the children why they thought the birds did not eat the food.  A couple of our friends said that the reason might have been that the birds did not like the food.  Another friend thought that the birds might not like human food.  A friend said that there were not enough seeds.  Another reason mentioned was that maybe the birds could not smell the food.  We will continue our observations of the bird feeders.
